Description: Mount Mary Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Bandra West, Mumbai, Maharashtra. It stands atop a small hill about 84 meters high, overlooking the Arabian Sea. While Bandra is known for its glamour today, this location is steeped in centuries of history. Originally a fishermen's village. This basilica is over a century old, although the statue of the Virgin Mary inside dates back to the 16th century. In the late 15th century, a Jesuit priest envisioned building a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The chapel's first structure was constructed from mud on a hill overlooking the Arabian Sea in Bandra. By 1640, this structure had been converted into a chapel. In the 1700s, the church was invaded by pirates from Muscat, who severed the right hand of the Virgin Mary statue and damaged the church.

This broken statue was replaced with a statue of Our Lady of Navigators, which was brought from a nearby church, St. Andrews Church. In 1761, the original statue of the Virgin Mary was repaired, and the church was rebuilt. Locals erected a small detachable statue of the infant Jesus at the location where the hand was cut off. Today, the same statue of the Virgin Mary is venerated in the church. The Church is a beautiful semi-Gothic structure. The ground floor features a large, attractive door with windows on either side of the entrance. Above the main door is an arch displaying an emblem with the initials "A.M." engraved on it stands for "Ave Maria," a Latin phrase used by the Angel Gabriel to greet Mother Mary. These initials are represented on a crown structure, flanked by two small lilies. The church's walls are adorned with delicate fibreglass frescoes depicting the life of Mother Mary. The statue of Mother Mary holding the infant Jesus is located on the seven-step high altar, and at the lowest level of the altar, "The Last Supper" is engraved on a marble plaque. The Mount Mary Fair, also known as the Bandra Fair, is an eight-day event celebrating the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This fair is believed to have existed for 300 years.
