Description: Panchhakki is a historical water mill that showcases the scientific thought processes behind medieval Indian architecture. Located in Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra, this monument is a marvel of engineering from that era, reflecting the innovations and ingenuity of the time. Built-in the 17th century by Turktaj Khan, a high-ranking officer of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, Panchhakki was designed to generate energy from water sourced from a spring located on a nearby hill. The watermill's design allows the large stones of the flour mill to rotate using the energy generated by water flowing from the spring. In addition to the water mill, Panchhakki serves as a complex that includes a mosque, a madrasa, an ashram, the residence of a minister, a cemetery, and a house for women.

This historical site is situated within a garden adjacent to the dargah of a Sufi saint. Twenty years later, an officer named Jamil Beg Khan added a rectangular reservoir to the site. The main attraction of Panchakki—the water mill—was utilized to grind grains for pilgrims and soldiers stationed in the garrison. It is powered by an underground water channel that begins at a well located above the confluence of the Harsul River and a tributary, approximately eight km away. As the water pipe crosses the tributary, it flows into the Panchhakki reservoir, where water is dropped from a significant height into the tank to create the necessary power to operate the mill. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the river from this location, enhanced by the shade of a large banyan tree on the southern bank, adding to the picturesque scenery. The water mill is situated in the northwestern corner near the tank and operates entirely on water power. Panchhakki is a popular tourist destination in Sambhajinagar and is centrally located near Bibi Ka Maqbara. Its surroundings are known for some of the most picturesque landscapes in the city.
