Description: Mahabaleshwar Hill Station is in Satara district Maharashtra which is situated in the Sahyadri hills at an altitude of about 4,500 feet above sea level. Strawberries are grown in all temperate parts of the world and many varieties are cultivated in these parts. The fruit is rich in vitamin C and is usually eaten fresh and can be preserved in many ways. The plant is a small herbaceous plant with a fibrous root system and a crown from which basal leaves arise. These leaves are compound, usually three-leafed, serrated edged and usually hairy. The flowers, usually white, sometimes red, grow in small clusters on slender stalks that emerge from the leaf axils like creeping stems. The fruit-bearing strawberry originated in Europe in the 18th century. During the 19th century, most countries developed their varieties.

Its early crops could be grown under glass or plastic covers. Strawberries perish very quickly and require cool and dry storage. Strawberries were introduced to the region from Australia during the British rule period in Mahabaleshwar, and local farmers have since developed several unique varieties, some of which are imported. It grows mainly in the hilly region of western Maharashtra, which accounts for about 85 per cent of the total Strawberry production in India. The cool climate and red soil of the region create ideal conditions for strawberry cultivation, resulting in fruit with a distinctive flavour. About half of the strawberries grown in the region are of the Californian Sweet Charlie variety, while Camarosa and Winter Dawn are the other two important varieties. Notable additional varieties include Rania and Nabila. Here strawberries are used to make a variety of food products, such as jams, fruit crushes, ice cream, milkshakes, strawberries with fresh cream, strawberry fudge, strawberry wine, and jelly toffee. In 2009, the All India Strawberry Growers Association proposed that the Mahabaleshwar strawberry be registered under the Geographical Indications Act and granted Geographical Indication (GI) status two years later in 2010.
