Description: The Flamingo Sanctuary, located along the Thane Creek Mud Beach between Vashi and Airoli, is a significant haven for nature and bird lovers in Mumbai. Covering 1690 hectares and spanning 10 km of mangroves along the eastern coast, the sanctuary attracts migratory flamingos from Kutch, who stay for about five months each year. It's the first flamingo sanctuary in Mumbai, created through the collaboration of the Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Park and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). The sanctuary's mangroves provide an ideal habitat for these beautiful birds, making it a must-visit for those interested in biodiversity and birdwatching. The Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Interpretation Centre at Airoli, Navi Mumbai, is an exceptional initiative aimed at fostering environmental awareness and conserving coastal and marine ecosystems in Maharashtra.

It integrates native coastal vegetation, including indigenous plants, grasses, and aquatic species, to create habitats for various fauna such as butterflies, birds, and insects. One of the centre pieces of this conservation effort is the protection of flamingos, which are a major draw for visitors during their seasonal migrations, particularly during the Flamingo Safari, which runs from December until the monsoons. The park is vigilant about maintaining the well-being of the birds and managing pollution to preserve the integrity of the mudflats, which are crucial habitats for the flamingos.
