Description: During 1650, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ordered his Peshwa Moropant Trimbak Pingle to build the Pratapgad Fort it was built on the mountainous Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats high peak and completed in 1656. The Fort was in keeping with the strategic plan made by Shivaji. This two-tiered fort is divided into 2 parts called the Upper and the Lower Fort, the upper part of the fort is square and 180 meters long on either side, and the lower part of the fort is 320 meters long and 110 meters wide. It is situated at a height of 3500 feet from the ground. It was constructed on the banks of the Nira and Koyna rivers. Pratapgad Fort was built to protect the mountain pass. Three years later, a major battle took place between the Mughal commander Afzal Khan and Shivaji. Shivaji Maharaj was victorious in the war. After the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818, the Marathas handed over this fort to the East India Company. There are also two temples inside the fort which are of Mahadev and Maa Bhavani. The temples of this fort are very famous and have always attracted tourists and devotees.
