Description: This lake was first recognised in 1823 when British officer JE Alexander arrived here and was stunned when he saw Lonar Lake.

This Lake is located in Buldhana district of Maharashtra. The lake has been declared as a National Geoheritage Site and also declared as a Ramsar Wetland in the year 2020. The lake has also been a wildlife sanctuary since 2015. Lonar Lake or Lonar Crater is a lagoon lake that was formed by a meteorite. It is the only prominent hoverback in basalt rock. The lake has both alkaline and brackish water. Lonar Lake has been declared a wildlife sanctuary for the conservation of the lake.

One special thing about Lonar Lake is that there are remains of many ancient temples here. Daityasudan temple is also included in these. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Durga, Surya and Narasimha. Their structure is like the temples of Khajuraho. Apart from this, there are also ancient Lonardhar Temple, Kamalja Temple, and Motha Maruti Temple. It is said that they were built about 1,000 years ago by the kings of the Yadav dynasty. The lake is oval in shape and the meteorite impact came from the east.
