Description: The Sun Temple of Modhera, dedicated to the Sun God, is located in Modhera village of Mehsana district of Gujarat. This temple is the oldest Solanki temple in Gujarat, dating back to 1026-27 AD. It was built by King Bhimdev I during his reign of 1022 - 1063 AD. This temple has three parts, (1) Garbhagriha with movable and attached octagonal Gudhamandapa. (2) a separate sabha mandapa with an arch in front and (3) a large flagged tank decorated with several miniature shrines, while the gudhamandapa is adorned with carved images of the twelve Adityas, the sabha mandapa is a magnificent diagonally arranged octagonal hall Which is a set of pillars with torana arches in alternating triangular and semi-circular designs with a sacred pond. This temple was probably built during the year 1024-1025 to commemorate the victory over the  Mahmud of Ghazni who was the invader. An inscription has been found here which dates to the invasion by Ghazni rather than its construction.

Bhimdev returned to power soon thereafter, so the temple was constructed soon after 1026 AD. The Rangamandapa was added much later during the reign of Karna in the 12th century along with the gateways, temple verandahs and temple thresholds. This temple is locally known as Sita-ni-Chauri and Ramkund. This temple is a monument of national importance and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The PPC on Sun Temple was issued by the Postal Department Gujarat Circle in 1977, In which a circular portion with the date was found on both the sides on right and left, later this PPC lost its existence, during the Sun Temple Dance festival in 17 to 19 January 2002, it was reintroduced and depicting the front image of the temple on new PPC.
