Description: Gopal Krishna Gokhale played a significant role in the Indian Independence Movement. His influence was instrumental in inviting Gandhi back to India during the Movement, recognizing Gandhi's exceptional leadership qualities. Gandhi's non-cooperation movement in South Africa greatly impressed Gokhale, leading him to identify Gandhi's potential as a community leader. Upon returning to India from South Africa, Gandhiji founded the Kochrab Ashram on 25 May 1915, marking his first ashram establishment. His friend and fellow Barrister Jivanlal Desai gifted him his house in Kochrab, where Gandhi Ji resided for approximately one and a half years.

Gandhi and his followers began living in the complex on 20 July 1915, naming it the Satyagraha Ashram to reflect their commitment to achieving India's independence through peaceful means. Reflecting on his decision to settle in Ahmedabad in 1915, Gandhi cited his ability to serve the country through the Gujarati language as a Gujarati. The Kochrab Ashram, featuring a colonial-style building with a white facade, consists of hostels and kitchens. The Gandhi Memorial Museum, located within the Ashram premises, houses a small collection of artefacts and historical photographs related to Mahatma Gandhi's life. The image of Gandhi and the Satyagraha Ashram is depicted on the PPC in honour of Gandhi's 50th death anniversary.
