Description: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial Shahibaug, Ahmedabad is located in the Moti Shahi Mahal, a Mughal-era palace that was built for the residence of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1618–22, when he served as the governor of Mughal-era Gujarat. The palace later came under the control of the British and in the middle of the nineteenth century, a cantonment was established, which was used for government purposes. Satyendra Nath Tagore was posted as District Judge in 1878. He invited his brother Rabindranath Tagore, when he was 17 years old, to stay here with him. It was from this palace that his initial journey of stories and poems began. It was here that he wrote his famous story "The Hungry Stones". After independence, this palace was converted into Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor (1960-78). It was built as a memorial in his honour by the Government of Gujarat on the hundredth birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It was decided (1975). This memorial was established on 7 March 1980. The collection of items related to Sardar Patel in this national memorial is world-class and a tribute to this great icon of India. The white and red façade of the building is well-maintained and is surrounded by a garden. The complex also has a life-size statue of Sardar Patel where he can be seen in a saluting pose against the background of two maps of India with words that call him the 'Architect of Modern India'. Now its name has been changed to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum. This museum houses and displays relics from the past, but also has some of the latest technological exhibits that provide an interactive experience about the life and history of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. On the occasion of Sardar Patel's birthday on 31 October 2005, its society organized "Sardar Patel Akhand Bharat Gaurav Yatra-2005" and organized a stamp exhibition related to him at the memorial site itself, where they displayed a special theme on Sardar Patel. Issued a Cancellation which was later issued as a PPC by the Department of Posts, Gujarat Circle, (14.08.2006).
