Description: Alfred High School, also known as Mohandas Gandhi High School or Kathiawar High School, is one of India's oldest educational institutions, located in Rajkot. Established on October 17, 1853, during British rule, it was the first English school in the Saurashtra region and became notable as the school where Mahatma Gandhi studied for several years. Initially named Rajkot English School, it evolved into a full-fledged high school, eventually being named Alfred High School in 1907 in honour of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.

The current school buildings were constructed by Nawab Sir Muhammad Bahadur Khanji Babi of Junagadh, and the institution was officially inaugurated in January 1875 by Sir Philip Wodehouse, Governor of Bombay. After India gained independence, the school was renamed "Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya" on October 2, 1971, in honour of Gandhi, who graduated from the school in 1887. Described as a quiet, academically average student, Gandhi was one of only two students to matriculate from his class of 38. The school operated for 164 years before closing in May 2017. Later, it was transformed into a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, managed by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation in 2018. The museum conversion project, costing over Rs 26 crore, preserves the history of this iconic institution and Gandhi's legacy.
