Description: The Mud Work Art form was started at the end of the 16th century by the women of the Rabari community in Kutch Gujarat, they used to do this art on the walls to decorate their homes and temples. It is said that they neither made any pattern nor made any plan in advance to make this art, it was believed that apart from adding beauty to the houses and temples, it also brought positivity and safety to them. This art is done on the walls to keep the houses cool for the dry climate of Kutch. This art is also used by potters to make utensils. Now potters started creating this art on plywood with these designs. And thus, "Lippan" on the walls became "Mud Mirror Work" on plywood. Through small details like depicting the local flora and fauna in this art, the culture and traditions of Gujarat are brought to life which is a beautiful representation of the culture and faith. In this ancient art, spiritual and cultural importance is explained through stories. This art requires hard work and patience, where human imagination is also rich along with meaning, Lippan art is a complex form of folk art. Which initially originated from Kutch. The materials used in Lippan art include mirrors, coloured glass, clay, combs, needles and coloured clothes. Now the popularity of this art has spread all over the world. The Department of Posts has issued a PPC to promote the art of Kachchi Mud Work in which this art is depicted.
