Description: Chorao, also known as Choddannam or Choddanee, is a picturesque island situated along the Mandovi River in Goa, approximately 5 km from Panaji and 10 km from Mapusa. It is the largest of Goa’s 17 islands and is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, particularly its stunning flora and fauna. The island features an extensive mangrove ecosystem, lush forests, and wetlands, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. One of the island’s key attractions is the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named in honour of the renowned Indian ornithologist, Dr Salim Ali, often referred to as the “Birdman of India.” Spanning 178 hectares, it is the largest bird sanctuary in Goa and serves as a habitat for over 400 species of birds.

Coastal and aquatic birds, such as herons, kingfishers, coots, and pintails, can commonly be spotted, along with various migratory species during the winter months. The mangrove vegetation also plays a vital role as a breeding ground for fish, insects, and other wildlife. For bird lovers, the sanctuary offers excellent facilities, including a watchtower for bird observation and guided boat tours through the water channels. These tours, organized by the Wildlife Division, typically accommodate groups of 8 to 9 people. Additionally, the sanctuary supports a variety of aquatic life, including fish and crocodiles, further enhancing its ecological significance. Chorao’s natural beauty, combined with its vibrant wildlife, makes it a must-visit destination for eco-tourism and bird-watching in Goa.
