Description: The name of this sea turtle is related to the colour of its shell, olive green. The olive ridley turtle is a small sea turtle. The adult is about 60 cm to 70 cm in length, and its shell is usually heart-shaped. The turtle, considered the smallest and most abundant sea turtle in the world, has seen its numbers decline significantly over the past few years and leaves few nesting sites globally. The IUCN has considered it vulnerable. Olive Ridley turtles found off the coast of Goa head towards the coast to nest. They lay hundreds of eggs. After the eggs hatch, the babies return to the sea. A female tortoise lays 80 to 120 eggs in a season. Their simultaneous nests are collectively known as 'arribadas', and females return to the same beach throughout their lifetime to lay eggs. Their nesting season usually begins every year from September to May.

Conservation of turtle nests in Goa began in the late nineties when the forest department and residents started working together. But even now, due to the increasing human population and excessive light, noise and other physical pollution, the number of turtle nests has declined significantly.

To bring awareness among people towards these turtles, the Goa Postal Division and Goa Forest Department have jointly issued a permanent pictorial cancellation on the Olive Ridley Turtle at Lolim Sub Post Office on 21.03.2022.
