PO Name: Sirpur

Description: Sirpur, located on the banks of the Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh, is a historically rich village known for its ancient monuments and archaeological significance. It was the capital of the Panduvanshi dynasty in ancient times and has been referred to as Lakshmi ki Nagari in old Indian texts and inscriptions. The site has a unique blend of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples and monasteries dating from the 5th to the 12th centuries. Notable discoveries include 22 Shiva temples, 5 Vishnu temples, 10 Buddhist Viharas, 3 Jain Viharas, a bazaar dating back to the 6th/7th century, an ancient bathing pool, and a Lakshmana temple. One of the most prominent structures here is the Lakshmana temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and associated with the Ramayana.

The temple exhibits remarkable architectural and sculptural craftsmanship of the Gupta period. The 7th-century Chinese traveller Xuanzang mentioned Sirpur as a flourishing centre of monasteries and temples. British officer Alexander Cunningham visited Sirpur in 1872 and documented the Lakshmana temple, giving the site international recognition. Excavations in 2003 have unearthed numerous temples, monasteries and artefacts that confirm Sirpur's significance as a vibrant cultural and religious centre in ancient India. Sirpur remains an important archaeological and historical site, reflecting the architectural brilliance and cultural harmony of ancient Indian civilizations.
