Pondicherry is a Union Territory that has a Unique and Beautiful Monument known as Aai Mandapam, the story behind Aai Mandapam is quite remarkable. In the 16th century, Krishna Deva Raya who was the king of the Vijayanagara Empire was on a tour of his kingdom. While passing through Pondicherry, the king mistook an ornamental building for a temple and folded his hands to pay his respects. When he found out that it was the house of a Devadasi, he became angry and ordered the Devadasi to be brought to him in chains. The Devadasi pleaded for mercy before the king but the king refused. The Devadasi then told the king that she would demolish her own house and build a water storage tank there, and then the king forgave her. Once during the French reign, when there was a water crisis, the city was provided water from here. When the Emperor was informed about the story of Devadasi, the Emperor was impressed by the sacrifice and service of the Devadasi. Then Emporer ordered in the centre of Bharathi Park, which stands as a tribute monument in Greco-Roman style. This memorial with a stone plaque engraved in traditional Tamil and Latin stands as a symbol of gratitude for the selfless work of Aai in ensuring water supply to the people of Pondicherry. The image of Aayi Mandapam is depicted on the official emblem of Pondicherry.
