Lake has a lot of fish so fishing is the second largest industry in the region. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains on three sides, the sparkling calm waters of Dal undoubtedly mark it as one of the most beautiful lakes in India. Shikara is a traditional gondola-type light rowing boat mostly seen on the pristine Dal Lake apart from other lakes. To see these beautifully decorated boats gliding peacefully on the lake, offering boat rides from the lake shore to the houseboats. 

Houseboats are an indelible part of the scenery of Dal Lake which is always ready to take the tourists on a romantic and peaceful ride of the lake and calm their nerves as the houseboats float over the gently undulating waters. On the banks of Lake the campus of the University of Kashmir is situated, The lake's shoreline is approximately 15.5 kilometers.

Beautiful views of the lake can be seen from the shoreline of Mughal gardens, such as the Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, from the houseboats sailing along the lake.
