Description: Dal Lake and Shikaras in Srinagar are a symbol of Kashmir. Dal Lake known as the Himalayan Lake has five basins and many small mountain rivers connected to it. Fishing is the second largest industry in the region as it is abundantly found in this lake. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains on three sides, the dazzling calm waters of Dal undoubtedly make it one of the most beautiful lakes in India. The shoreline of the lake is about 15.5 km. The beautiful views of the lake can be seen from the banks of Shalimar Bagh Nishat Bagh and Mughal Gardens and the houseboats plying along the lake. The history of this floating Post office in the Famous Dal Lake of Srinagar Kashmir dates back 200 years. This post office was started during the British era and still is active and functional by carrying out all the delivery activities of letters. It was called Nehru Park post office before 2011. The postman here delivers letters by travelling in Shikara. The Shikara here is a traditional gondola-type light boat commonly found in Dal Lake and other lakes of Kashmir. It is a popular and relaxing activity for tourists visiting the region. Apart from leisure and tourism, the locals also use Shikaras for fishing, seaweed harvesting and transportation.

These beautifully decorated boats are a cultural icon and a treat to the eyes as they float peacefully on the lake. Shikaras come in various sizes and are used for various purposes including transportation. A Shikara ride on Dal Lake offers a glimpse of the local life and is a great way to experience the beauty of the region. The boat is made using pine wood. And length from 25 to 41 feet. It has a distinct pointed front end, a central portion made of 8 wooden planks, and a flat rear portion. The middle portion of the boat has seating arrangements, beneath which cushions and upholstery are placed. The boat is also fitted with a canopy, anchor rings, and wooden pegs to tie it to the banks of the lake. The Shikara is painted in bright colours and can be further decorated and embellished.
