PO Name: Diu

Description: Diu is the district town of the union territory, This fort was constructed by the Portuguese in the year 1535 AD to avoid the invasion by the Mughals, Gujarat Sultanate and Rajputs. Their rule was started around 1537 AD and continued till 1961 AD. This was an important trade route of the Arabian Sea. In 1534 AD, Bahadur Shah of Gujarat made a peace treaty with them and allowed them to build a fort in Diu. Now this fort has been under the control of the Indian Government since 1961. This fort is the largest structure in Diu, most of its walls surround its sea coast, and 3 sides of this fort are adjacent to the sea. There is a moat between the outer and inner walls of this fort which provides security to the fort. It is made of sandstone rocks and is quite huge has 3 entrances to go inside. There are 5 big windows with stone galleries on the wall just in front of its main entrance, from which very beautiful views can be seen. A lighthouse at the end of it and 3 churches in this fort Which were constructed between 1593 AD and 1610 AD. In the year 1998, St. Thomas Church in this fort was converted into a museum. Which is an archaeological treasure.
