PO Name: Killai

Description: Killai is a panchayat town in the Chidambaram taluk of the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. On the coast of the Bay of Bengal and the mouth of the Vellar River and the river's south bank, across from the town of Parangipettai. The only reserve forests in the taluk are located to the south of the town. The Killai and Pichavaram reserve forests contain mangrove forest ecosystems. The area is home to the second-largest mangrove forest in the world, covering about 3000 acres. The depth of the mangrove forest ranges from 1 to 3 meters, and the water appears muddy with shades of yellow, green, and blue due to varying water depths and its proximity to the sea. Mangroves are shrubs and trees that thrive in salty or semi-salty water, typically found in coastal areas where freshwater and saltwater mix, such as where a river meets the ocean.

The mangrove forest is situated between two major estuaries, These backwaters are interconnected by the Vellar and Coleroon river systems. Mangrove forests play a crucial role in the ecosystem, providing coastal stability and serving as a habitat and protective environment for numerous animal, fish, and bird species. These unique ecosystems are typically found in tropical and subtropical regions. The dense mangroves act as a natural barrier against powerful waves, helping to shield the land from erosion and damage. India Post, Tamilnadu Circle issued the PPC on the occasion of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. The species of mangrove depicted in the cancellation is Rhizophora mucronata.
