Description: Pulicat is a historic seashore town in the Thiruvallur District, of Tamil Nadu state. It is about 60 km. from Chennai. Pulicat was founded by the Portuguese in 1502 as a trading post and they also built a fort there later, they lost it to the Dutch in 1609. He ruled Pulicat till 1690. It was captured by the British in 1825. After independence, it became a Town of Tamil Nadu. The lighthouse station is separated from Pulicat town by a seawater channel. A bridge is available to cross the channel and can be reached by a 5-minute walk. The purpose of the lighthouse at this site is to warn against the existence of a shallow coastal area about 4 nautical miles from shore. This shallow coast extends for more than 9 nautical miles towards the south. The light in this old lighthouse was of very low power to mark such danger at that time. The old lighthouse tower was constructed in the year 1859. After some modifications made in 1910, the lighthouse instrument remained in service until 1986. The present lighthouse tower was constructed during 1984-85, with a height of 20 metres. Which is a circular brick masonry tower with black and white stripes. Which was established and made operational on 25 August 1986. The old lighthouse tower was later destroyed. Now equipped with all types of modern self-powered equipment, An instrument consisting of a fourth-order optic with a PV light was installed on this tower; Pulicat Light House is considered to be the main lighthouse on the coasts of South India.
