Description: Century old Muttom Light House was built by the British Government in Muttamtura village on the top of steep cliff. Earlier to the year 1875, a light used to be hoisted from a mast for the benefit of local fishermen. Then a column was constructed and it was painted in Black and White bands .The British planned the new lighthouse tower at Muttom after they had taken control of Colombo (Srilanka) so as to assist their vessels plying between Colombo and ports on India's west coast. The British Government started its construction in 1857 and completed work in 1882. The new Lighthouse was formally commissioned into service on 1st Jan 1910. The light house is under the control of the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships and Ministry of Shipping.
