Description: Mahabalipuram, known by its traditional name Mamallapuram, is a treasure trove of ancient Indian architecture and art, by its iconic Shore Temple. Located on the Coromandel Coast in Tamil Nadu, this UNESCO World Heritage Site bears testimony to the architectural and cultural achievements of the Pallava dynasty, which ruled between the 6th and 9th centuries CE. These monuments are classified into five types, rock-cut caves, monolithic temples, sculpted bas-reliefs, structural temples and excavated remains of temples built during the reign of Narasimha Varman I Mamalla. The rock-cut caves show early examples of craftsmanship. The monolithic temples, locally known as Rathas because they resembled temple chariots, are among the most famous structures in the complex.

The sculpted bas-reliefs are another highlight and are one of the largest and most intricate examples of open-air rock reliefs in the world. The Shore Temple was built around 700 CE by King Narasimhavarman II Rajasimha. The Shore Temple is the crown jewel of the place. This temple complex on the beach has three temples, two dedicated to Lord Shiva and one to Lord Vishnu. The Shore Temple not only served as a landmark for sailors and traders but emphasised the strategic importance of the area as a thriving port city of that time. Its Dravidian architectural style multi-storey pyramidal structures and intricate carvings have inspired awe for centuries. India Post,  Tamilnadu Circle Released a PPC featuring the Shore Temple highlighting the enduring significance and popularity of this Architectural Marvel.
