Description: Varkala, 16 km from Trivandrum, is on the seaside of Sivagiri Hill, where Shree Narayan Guru’s social and spiritual centre is situated. Sri Narayana Guru has left a lasting impact on Indian spiritual history. Born on 22nd Aug. 1856, in the village Chempazhanthi near Thiruvananthapuram. He embarked on a life journey that forever changed the socio-religious conservative of the time. His goal was to break the shackles of discrimination and division that plagued the society during the 19th century. Despite belonging to the Ezhava caste, considered untouchable at the time, young Narayana showed a tendency for solitude and contemplation from an early age. His spiritual longing led him to explore local temples and eventually renounce the world to live in solitude in the forest for eight years. During this time, he delved deep into the Vedas, Upanishads, literature, Hatha Yoga, and various philosophical topics.

Having attained the ultimate truth through his spiritual journey, he emerged from seclusion and reached Aruvippuram, where he set out to realize his vision of a casteless and discrimination-free society. Here, he built a temple that allowed people of all castes, religions, and genders to worship together. This move faced strong opposition from the caste system, but he remained dedicated to his vision of a harmonious society, promoting the belief in one religion, caste, and God for all humanity. He was also an author, writing several books in various languages, demonstrating his deep understanding of philosophy, spirituality, and the human condition. He was at the forefront of the temple entry movement and advocated against social discrimination. His vision extended to practical aspects of life, emphasizing cleanliness, education, agriculture, trade, handicrafts, and technical training. His physical journey ended on 20th Sept. 1928, but his legacy lives on today. The PPC on Sri Narayana Guru is one of the series of 6 PPCs issued on the same day by Kerala Circle, India Post from different places.
