Description: Amritpuri is the main ashram of Mata Amritanandamayi. There is a Math of the world-famous spiritual guru Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. Here she is also known as Amma, which means 'mother'. The monastery whose headquarters is located at Parayakadavu in Alappad Panchayat in Kollam district of Kerala. It was founded as a charitable and spiritual organization in 1981 by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, popularly known as Amma among her devotees. Amma is famous throughout the world as a social reformer and spiritual leader. This monastery, based on the principle of Karma Yoga or work as an offering to the divine, is home to over 3000 devotees from all over the world who live here as householders, monastics and monastic students. The monastery regularly supports humanitarian work including disaster relief, health care for the poor, and scholarships for poor students. 

Amma gives darshan several times a week, where her devotees can express their worries and concerns. Devotional songs and mantras give the monastery a spiritual aura, while humanitarian work conducted by the monastery helps millions of people around the world live better lives. The Math is an international charitable organization that aims at the spiritual and material upliftment of mankind. The institute, along with its partner organizations and the MAM Trust, undertakes charitable work including disaster relief, healthcare for the poor, environmental programmes, fighting hunger and scholarships for poor students. It also runs a seven-campus university known as Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, 90 English-medium CBSE schools known as Amrita Vidyalayas and classes in yoga, meditation and Sanskrit. It is a voluntary organization, which bases its activities on the principle of Karma Yoga. It operates collectively with Amritanandamayi's other centres and organizations around the world under the umbrella title of Embracing the World.
