Description: The city of Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a significant port city situated in the southwest coastal region along the sea. It is a part of the Ernakulam district in Kerala. It boasts the heritage monuments of Fort Kochi and the colonial history of Mattancherry, offering a unique combination of cultural landmarks and contemporary urban life. Traditional Chinese fishing nets adorn the seashore and bustling urban areas, dating back to the city's importance as a spice trading centre during the 14th century, where it engaged in trade with merchants from Arab and European countries. The iconic cantilevered nets, locally known as Cheenavala in Malayalam, have become emblematic of Fort Kochi.

At sunset, the sight of these nets suspended in the air along the beach is truly remarkable. Crafted from teak wood and bamboo poles, these nets, standing at around 10 meters in height and extending over an area of about 20 meters, operate on the principle of balance. Manned by four fishermen, the nets are engineered such that the weight of a person walking on the main plank is sufficient to lower the equipment into the sea. Utilizing counterweights, lights, and a methodical rhythm, fishing activities usually take place during the mornings and evenings, presenting a captivating spectacle for first-time spectators.
