The Indian gaur lives in hilly forest areas. Male gaurs emit a whistling sound to indicate their presence when alone and under normal circumstances they meow like a cow. The adults of this species are dark black, while the babies are brown. They are protected in many forests and wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala. This wildlife sanctuary is home to a diverse range of wildlife including Sambar, Deer, Lion -Tailed Macaques, Tigers, Elephants, Leopards and freshwater Crocodiles. The sanctuary is nestled between the Annamalai and Neeliyampathi hills. Three rivers flow through the sanctuary, and it is rich in a variety of flora and avifauna. The area is rich in dense vegetation, with tall, fully-grown trees and several large and small waterfalls that adorn the landscape. The Postal Department depicted the face image of the Indian gaur.
