PO Name: Malampuzha Dam

Description: Malampuzha Dam which is about 10 km from Palakkad in Kerala. The dam project was initiated in 1949 by Shri M. Bhaktavatsalam, the then Public Works Minister of Madras Presidency. The foundation stone of the project was laid on 27 March 1949 and the dam was inaugurated on 9 October 1955 by Shri K. Kamaraj, the then Chief Minister of Madras. The dam is a tributary of Bharatappuzha, the second-longest river in Kerala. It was constructed to provide irrigation and drinking water to Palakkad and the surrounding villages. The dam is a combination of a 1,849 m long masonry dam and a 220 m long earthen dam. The dam is 125 feet high and has a total catchment area of 145 square km. It is the largest reservoir in Kerala.

The reservoir has a capacity of 8000 m3 of water and is served by a network of two canal systems. The dam is one of the major attractions of the district. The Malampuzha Garden with its manicured lawns, well-maintained flower beds, pools, fountains and paths is located near the dam. The garden is famous for its aerial ropeway. A ride through the aerial ropeway offers a panoramic view of the dam and the garden. The rock-cut garden here designed by Nek Chand is distinguished by the fact that it is made of waste materials such as used plastic bottles, cans, waste tiles, granite, stones, fuse carriers, etc. There is also a rose garden here. Apart from this, a freshwater aquarium, children's park and boating facilities make it an ideal place for picnics.
