PO Name: Agali

Description: Agali is a small town in Palakkad district in the state of Kerala. Agali is the nearest town to Silent Valley National Park. The Lion-Tailed Macaque is one of the rarest and most threatened primates. These are covered with black fur and have a striking grey or silver mane around their face that can be found in both genders. The face itself is hairless and black, they are named not for their mane, but for their tail, which is long, thin and bare, with a black tail at the end, similar to that of a lion. Their tail is about 25 cm in length. Their eyes are like hazelnuts, with black eyelids. These have deep cheek pouches useful for storing food and are quadrupeds with opposable fingers. With a body length of and a weight of, it is one of the smaller macaque species. Their range has become increasingly isolated and fragmented due to the spread of agriculture and cultivation of tea, coffee, teak and cinchona, the construction of reservoirs for irrigation and power plants with human settlements to support such activities.

The destruction of their habitat and their avoidance of human proximity have caused a steep decline in their population. From 1977 to 1980, public concern about the endangered status of these became the focal point of India's most fierce environmental debate of the decade, Save Silent Valley. Silent Valley has the largest number of these creatures. Other protected areas in Kerala include 10 Wildlife Sanctuaries and the Wayanad region. The Govt.  in southern states has acted positively to save it and is now no longer on the list of the World's 25 Most Endangered Primates. In the Technical Report of 2020, the total population of this macaque was about 4,000 in several areas of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. India Post Kerala Circle, Issued the PPC on The Lion-Tailed Macaque which is one of a series of 6 different PPCs for different places.
