Description:  Unkal Lake, located in Hubballi, is the largest water body within an urban area in North Karnataka. A man-made reservoir was constructed in the 11th century during the reign of the Chalukya dynasty. Initially built to provide water for agriculture and drinking, the lake continues to play a vital role in the region. It was reconstructed in 1893 by the renowned engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The lake supplies potable water to the city of Hubballi and the Dharwad district. It covers a total area of approximately 213 acres and 13 guntas, with a maximum depth ranging from 20 to 25 feet. The Lake is a picturesque and historically significant water body that has been central to the city’s ecosystem and culture for centuries.

Enclosed by lush greenery. The lake is rich in biodiversity, supporting a variety of aquatic life, including fish and water birds. Boating is one of the most beloved activities at the lake. The lake’s cultural significance is highlighted by the Lake Temple, a 1,000-year-old shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. This ancient temple attracts devotees and spiritual seekers from all over the region. More developments have transformed Unkal Lake into a recreational hub. Walking paths, landscaped gardens, and children’s play areas make it an ideal spot for gatherings, and celebrations. The lake’s role extends beyond recreation; it is crucial for maintaining Hubli’s ecological balance by recharging groundwater, mitigating floods, and providing a habitat for local wildlife.
