Description: The Clock Tower on the Library Building still stands as the central attraction of Belagavi in Karnataka, it was built in 1930 to 35. Belagavi which is also the administrative headquarters of the district. The Govt. of Karnataka had proposed to make Belagavi the second capital of Karnataka along with Bengaluru, so the second state administrative building, Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, was inaugurated here in October 2012. The Belgaum Native General Library, now known as the Public Reading Room, Belagavi, was established in 1848 by the then Collector M.J.D. Invariability.

This was the first library started in the state of Karnataka at that time. This clock tower is now a historical monument in Belagavi which is situated in Ganpat Gali there. At that time it had a large collection of English, Marathi and Gujarati books. It was given many names from time to time, Belgaum Native General Library in 1848, General Library Belgaum in July 1907 and Public Reading Room Belgaum in March 1921. Renovation of the building was planned after 1921 and the actual renovation of the new building began and was completed in 1925. The initial plan of the building was prepared by Shri Shashital. And then Mr. Dharwadkar made some changes. The clock tower is completely mechanical and requires a key once every 48 hours.
