Description: Aihole, once known as Aryapura, is called the 'Cradle of Indian Architecture'. Once the capital of the Chalukyan kingdom, this was where the earliest of temple builders took their first steps, trying out different styles, and discovered their talents in sculpture and ornamentation. Aihole has historical significance and has been called a cradle of Hindu rock architecture. Pulakeshin II ruled from 610 to 642AD and was a Vaishnav. Ravikriti was the court poet of Pulakeshin II who wrote inscriptions related to the king. The language used to write the inscription is Sanskrit based on Kannada script. Aihole (pronounced "Eye-hole") is also referred to as Aivalli, Ahivolal or Aryapura. The cancellation depicts Chalukyan Royal Emblem.
