Description: The Indian spotted chevrotain, known as the Indian mouse deer or Indian spotted deer, is a small, nocturnal ungulate found in India. This Indian spotted chevrotain is the smallest among the 12 species of deer found in India. The Indian spotted chevrotain has a brownish-yellow coat with white spots on its back and sides. Its underbelly is light in colour. The Indian spotted chevrotain has a shoulder height of 25-30 cm and weighs two to four kilograms. The Indian spotted chevrotain is found in deciduous, semi-evergreen forests and lives among old trees in dense bushes, where water is not very far away. Riverine forests are its preferred habitat. These Indian spotted chevrotain come out in the dark of night in search of fresh grass, leaves, fruits and flowers. Hunting by tribals and frequent forest fires are the biggest threats to these small deer. They also want to keep this mouse deer for display in the zoo but they do not know how to keep them. They require dense bushes and low-hight sheltered areas, just as they live in nature. They need a claustrophobic tunnel-shaped habitat that gives them a sense of security. Bandipur National Park in Karnataka is home to a variety of wildlife, including Indian spotted chevrotains.
