PO Name: Sriharikota Range

Description: Sriharikota is partly located in Sullurpeta mandal and partly located in Tada mandal in Tirupati District in Andhra Pradesh. It was selected for a satellite launch centre in 1969 and known as the Sriharikota Range, was located in a spindle-shaped barrier island off its eastern coast. It is 80 km north of Chennai. It was commissioned on 9 October 1971 when the first indigenously designed and manufactured X-band storm detection radar was installed in 1970. After that, an integrated upper air sounding system comprising X-Band weather-cum-wind finding MULTIMET radar and radiosonde system (401 MHz), designed and produced indigenously, was introduced in IMD in 1975 and with the help of this upgraded system, an RH-125 sounding rocket was launched.

The first launch attempt of an orbital satellite, Rohini I A, on a Satellite Launch Vehicle took place on 10 August 1979. SHAR was renamed 'Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR' (SDSC) on 5 September 2002 in memory of Satish Dhawan, former chairman of ISRO. The SHAR facility now has two launch pads, the second of which was built in 2005. The second launch pad was used for launches starting in 2005 and is a universal launch pad, accommodating all launch vehicles used by ISRO. The two launch pads will allow multiple launches in a single year, which was not possible earlier. India's lunar orbiter Chandrayaan-1 was launched from the centre on 22 October 2008. India's first Mars orbiter Mangalyaan was launched from the center on 5 November 2013.
