It is believed that Lord Shiva used to come down from his abode and meditate here surrounded by dense deodar forest. A heritage site protected under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple complex consists of about 125 temples and about 174 sculptures, including those of Lord Shiva and Parvati. More than 25 inscriptions have been found on the walls and pillars of some of these temples. According to the ASI, these temples are estimated to be around 2,500 years old and belong to the post-Gupta and pre-medieval eras. Most of these were built and renovated by the kings of the Katyuri dynasty. In recent years, a red sandstone pillar with carvings of humans and spiritual figures has also been discovered here. It is said that this pillar was constructed in the first century BC. The most famous temples here are Jageshwar Mahadev Temple, Dandeshwar Temple and Mrityunjay Temple.
