Description: Lucknow is known throughout the world for its distinctive Chikankari embroidery work. In this embroidery floral patterns and vines are used on fine cotton fabric. Inspired by these, the Postal Department issued this attractive cancellation, which depicts the image of a Sunflower with Rose Bud, taken from the famous Chikankari embroidery style of Lucknow. This embroidery is famous for its delicate and intricate white threadwork on fine muslin fabric, creating beautiful patterns and designs. Chikankari is believed to have originated in India during the Mughal period, under the Mughal rulers. This art flourished under the patronage of their aristocratic families. Chikankari was mainly done on white muslin cloth using white thread. These motifs were inspired by elements of nature, such as flowers, leaves and birds. Efforts to revive this art started from the beginning of the 19th century. To encourage this art, various organizations and the Postal Department recognized its cultural and artistic values, thereby reviving people's interest in this craft.
