Description: Allahabadi Surkha Guava, popularly known as Allahabadi Guava, has emerged as a Local Special fruit not only in the Indian markets but also internationally. Whoever tastes the flavour of this amazing fruit is mesmerized. Resembling an apple in appearance, Surkha Guava or Sebia is famous for its great taste and distinct sweetness that makes it truly stand out. One of the most distinctive features of Surkha Guava is its bright pink outer layer, which can easily create confusion with apples or other guava varieties. This variety is completely different from the common guavas found throughout India. The apple-shaped fruit has a pulp that is predominantly deep pink, which is characterized by its juiciness, which is completely different from the white or red pulp of guavas grown in other regions. The Surkha guava has profound cultural significance, resonating deeply in local traditions and folklore. It has inspired numerous stories, poetic expressions and ghazals that highlight its significance in the community. During the Mughal period, this fruit received special mention and praise, which cemented its status as an iconic part of the agricultural heritage of the region.

The famous Shayar Akbar Allahabadi praised the Surkha guava in the late 1800s, declaring it a divine gift to the earth, often describing it as nothing less than a heavenly delight. The amazing taste of the Allahabadi guava can be largely attributed to the rich and fertile soil found in the Kaushambi district, which is its main production area. Located in the Doaba region, about 300 hectares of land is dedicated exclusively to guava cultivation. The local government has identified Muratganj and Chail blocks as important fruit-growing areas, which account for 75 per cent of the horticulture production in the district. During this fruit season, the arrival of this exquisite fruit in the market is around 50 tonnes per day, which indicates its popularity and demand. Due to its exceptional taste and sweetness, it was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007-08, which further strengthened its reputation at both national and international levels. This recognition not only highlights the unique qualities of Surkha guava but also underlines the importance of preserving and promoting indigenous agricultural products.
