Description: The historic flight by Henri Pequet on February 18, 1911, marked a groundbreaking moment in both aviation and postal history. By delivering 6,000 cards and letters over a distance of 8.2 km (five miles) in just 13 minutes, Pequet not only initiated India’s first official airmail service but also conducted the world’s first official airmail delivery. This pioneering event, which took place in Allahabad (modern-day Prayagraj), underscored the potential of aviation for commercial and logistical purposes. Pequet piloted a Humber-Sommer biplane, an early model aircraft, to carry out this mission during the United Provinces Exhibition.

Organized by Mr. Windham to support a charitable cause, the flight helped raise funds for the Holy Trinity Church’s boys’ hostel. Contributors paid a small surcharge alongside the regular postage, and the mail bore a unique postmark that became a symbol of the event’s historical significance. The innovation and success of this effort garnered international recognition. Newspapers like the Pittsburgh Daily Post highlighted its impact, emphasizing the global reach of the letters, which even made their way to London. The Indian Postal Department has since commemorated this milestone through a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation (PPC), ensuring the legacy of Pequot’s flight remains celebrated as a landmark in India’s postal and aviation heritage.
