Description: When was Raj Bhavan of UP built, was known as Kothi Hayat Baksh. Major General Claude Martin had drawn the blueprint of this building. In the year 1798, after the death of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the East India Company made Saadat Ali Khan the new ruler. The new ruler liked the European-style buildings which were built by Major General Claude Martin. Then he wished the task of building this mansion was given to Major General Claude Martin.

The two-storey palatial building of Lucknow city was built in the eastern part of the city surrounded by greenery. Hayat Baksh means giver of life. The buildings built under the influence of the East India Company differed from the traditional Indian architectural style and were called Kothi. In the Indian architectural style, it was necessary to have a courtyard in the house, for which no provision has been made in the rooms. The cells were generally two-storeyed, with long straight walls without any design. The only space for artistic works was doors and windows decorated in Gothic style.

This Kothi is an airy palatial building with high roofed verandahs all around. Only the Raj Darbar inside the Kothi is built according to Indian art and sculpture, while the rest of the building is completely influenced by the Western style. The arches of the Diwane Khas are decorated with flower strips and beautifully painted with golden paint.

In 1857, Major General Claude Martin made this mansion his residence and he also used this building for his security guards and the protection of his armory.

In 1873, beautiful lawns, fountains and beautiful sitting rooms were also built under the direction of Sir George Cooper. In 1907, a part of this mansion was demolished and a ballroom was also built in it. The ballroom is now a dining hall.

Before independence, Kothi Hayat Baksh was declared Government House, the official residence of the Governor of the United Provinces from 1921 to 1947.

After independence, its name was changed to Raj Bhavan.
