PO Name: Chittorgarh

Description: Chittorgarh, situated in the royal state of Rajasthan, proudly served as the capital of the revered Sisodia dynasty of Rajputs of Mewar. The formidable Chittor fort valiantly withstood three sieges, witnessing the inhabitants' unwavering bravery. However, in the face of capture, the women and children chose to commit Jauhar, a courageous act of self-immolation. Among the notable sacrifices are those of Rani Padmini and Rani Karnavati. In 1568, during a conflict with the Mughals, the heroic defenders Jaimal and Fata's sacrifice left an indelible mark, leading the Mughal emperor Akbar to honour them by installing their statues in the Agra Fort. Chittorgarh is also hallowed ground, being associated with the revered Meera Bai. Notably, the grand Chittorgarh Fort stands as the largest in Asia. A striking feature within the fort is the majestic Vijay Stambh, or Victory Tower, erected by the illustrious Mewar king Rana Kumbha in 1448 to commemorate his triumph over Mahmud Khilji.

This towering structure, meticulously built over 30 years, comprises nine distinct floors, each adorned with unique markings and featuring graceful balconies. Soaring to a height of 37.19 meters, the tower is crafted from red sandstone and white marble, intricately embellished with carvings of Hindu deities both inside and out. The pinnacle floor proudly displays a carved genealogy of the rulers of Chittor from Hamir to Rana Kumbha. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Victory Tower showcases detailed carvings of period weaponry, musical instruments, and other implements, depicting religious pluralism with representations of the Jain goddess Padmavati and the word "Allah" inscribed in Arabic on different levels. Significantly, the names of the architect, Jaita, and his three sons are immortalized on the fifth floor. Noteworthy as a testament to its historical and cultural significance, the Fort of Chittorgarh was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The postal department has depicted the image of Vijay Stambh on the PPC but now it has discontinued.
