It was then called Guru Da Chakk, Sri Darbar Sahib is named after the Temple of Hari known as Sri Harmandir Sahib Temple, also known as the Golden Temple because it is covered with a gold foil. The fifth Guru Arjan Dev Ji thought of creating a central place of worship for the Sikhs and he designed the architecture of Darbar Sahib Amritsar. The holy Sarovar was planned by the third Guru Amardas Ji, and executed by Guru Ramdas Ji under the supervision of Baba Budha Ji. The land for this site was acquired by the earlier Guru Sahibs by payment or taken as a gift. The construction of Sarovar and City began simultaneously in 1570 work on both projects was completed in 1577.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji got its foundation laid by Hazrat Mian Mir Ji, a Muslim saint, on Dec. 1588. All the work was directly supervised by Guru Arjan Dev Ji with the assistance of prominent Sikhs, who built the structure on a lower level as opposed to raising it to a higher level and Guru Sahib kept it open on all four sides. The Shrine was completed in 1601. In the year 1604 Guru Arjan Dev Ji appointed Baba Budha Ji as the first Granti of Guru Granth Sahib. After this, it got the status of 'Ath Sath Tirth'. Maharaja Ranjit Singh rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809 and overlaid the sanctum with gold leaf in 1830.
