Description: The Himachal State Museum, located on Mall Road in Shimla, is housed in the historic mansion "Inverarm." Built in the Pahari architectural style, Inverarm started as a small mud-roofed house in the early 1860s. It was later owned by the ruler of Sirmaur, and taken over by the British govt. And enlarged to serve as the residence of British officials. After 1947, it continued as the official residence of government officials until 1973, when it was converted into the Himachal State Museum. The museum was inaugurated by Governor S. Chakravarti on January 26, 1974. The museum showcases an extensive collection of unique items, including ancient coins, paintings, and handicrafts influenced by Pahari art. Among its notable artefacts are stone images from the 8th century, original Pahari miniature paintings from the 17th century, and stone and metal sculptures. The museum also displays Chamba Handkerchiefs with intricate embroidery, exquisite woodwork, masks, jewellery, weapons, and contemporary art.

A highlight of the museum is its doll gallery, featuring various bride and groom dolls. The Shimla State Museum also holds anthropological objects, early 19th-century Pahari miniatures, numismatic discoveries, ancient stone-carved idols, bronze statues, arms, armour, Mughal and Rajasthani miniatures, 'Company' watercolours, and bronze sculptures from Himalayan temples. Additionally, oil paintings depicting picturesque views of the Himalayas and masks of deities from the Kullu and Sarahan valleys are on display. There is also a dedicated room for Mahatma Gandhi, featuring photographs and political cartoons from his visits to Shimla. The rich collection at the Himachal State Museum reflects the glorious cultural heritage and historical past of Himachal Pradesh.
