Description: Red Panda Located in the eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is home to the red panda. While the name "panda" comes from the Nepali "ponya" to denote bamboo eaters, the French zoologist Frédéric Cuvier was the first to publish the name "Red Panda" and gave it the taxonomic term Ailurus fulgens, meaning "A Cat with Shiny Fur.” The Red Panda is the state animal of Sikkim. Also known as the lesser panda, is a small, arboreal mammal native to the eastern Himalayas. It is easily recognized by its distinctive reddish-brown fur, which covers its body except its belly and legs. It also has a long, bushy tail that helps it balance when climbing trees. It is an important symbol of Sikkim's natural heritage and is considered a living treasure of the state. The state government has taken several measures to protect it and its habitat. It is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its population worldwide is estimated to be less than 10,000. Have an estimate. It is found in the temperate forests of Sikkim at an altitude of 6,000 to 12,000 feet. It is mainly herbivorous and eats bamboo leaves, twigs and fruits. It is also known to occasionally eat insects, eggs and small mammals. In Sikkim, it is considered a sacred animal and is believed to have a special association with the local deity Nyingma.
