The deer was rediscovered in the Keibul Lamjao Park area by then Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 November 2015, which led to the declaration of this reserved park area as a national park to protect and conserve the deer, now called brow-horned deer or Sangai in Meitei language, a subspecies of Eld's deer. From a small number of 14 deer in 1975, the number has increased to 91 in 2006, 88 in 2007, 92 in 2008, 76 in 2019 and 64 in 2023, as per the previous report. India Post, NE Circle has issued this PPC to promote the conservation of endemic and endangered deer species Sangai.
