PO Name: Imphal
Description: Imphal is the capital of the northeastern state of Manipur. It is a developed city with a low population density. It is known for the world's oldest polo ground, the tallest topiary plant (Samban Lei Sekpil), the world's only woman-run market, and the tallest polo player Marjing Polo statue with the Imphal River flowing along its eastern bank, dividing the city into Imphal East District and Imphal West District. The Brow-antlered Deer, Rucervus alder, also known as the Sangai, is the state animal of Manipur and was declared on 21 March 1989. The name "Sangai" was derived from the deer's unique behaviour in which it stops occasionally while running and looks back as if waiting for someone.

The Sangai is found only in Manipur, specifically in the Keibul Lamjao National Park, where it inhabits a 40 sq km area of floating vegetation called Amra. According to legends, the origin of the Sangai is linked to a prince named Pudangkoi of the Luwang clan, who was transformed into a deer. The Sangai is considered a symbol of Manipur's rich cultural heritage. Unfortunately, the Sangai is critically endangered and has seen a decline in numbers over the years, estimated to be 64 in 2023. The ecological vulnerability of their habitat is a major threat to their survival, and any political or natural disturbance can further endanger their survival. India Post released a PPC on the endemic, endangered species Sangai Deer on the Occasion of the Inauguration of the Philatelic Bureau Imphal, Manipur.
