Description: The Indian rhinoceros is also called the one-horned rhinoceros. Its have thick brown skin folds over the shoulders, back and tail, giving it an armoured appearance. Its legs and shoulders are covered with wart-like growths. They are now restricted to high grasslands and forests in the Himalayan foothills in protected areas of Assam, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. World’s Two-thirds population of the Indian rhinoceros are found only in Kaziranga National Park. Apart from this, the West Bengal Dooars area extends from the Darjeeling district to the Jalpaiguri district. In this area, a town named Mal or Malbazar in the famous Gorumara National Park, Jaldapara National Park, Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, Jhalong, Bindu, Samsing Suntalekhola etc. The Jaldapara National Park is a treasure trove of wildlife and is home to one-horned rhinoceros, which is considered to be the second largest after Kaziranga National Park. This national park is spread over an area of 216 sq km, which is an ideal place for these rhinos. It is also known primarily for its population of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros.
