PO Name: Darjeeling

Description: Darjeeling is a city in West Bengal lying at an elevation of 2,100 metres high in the Himalayas range. It is world-famous for its Tea Industry known as Indian Tea. Tea plants were first planted by the Britishers in the Darjeeling region around 1841. At that time, tea was coming for the Britishers from China and they were looking for an alternative supply of Chinese tea. Then they tried to grow its plants in many areas of India. The Assamica and Sinensis varieties of plants discovered by him were planted, and the tea plants benefited from the sloping drainage, cool environment and cloudy sky. Then the Britishers established many tea plantation estates here. The Darjeeling tea acquired its uniqueness of flavour and tests gained a reputation for quality, resulting in the tea being most exported to European countries where many Awards and certificates were obtained. The Tea Board of India furthered the certification and international promotion of Darjeeling tea.

This tea is made from the leaves of Camellia sinensis that is grown and processed in the Darjeeling district or Kalimpong district in West Bengal, India. Since 2004, the term Darjeeling tea has been a registered geographical indication referring to products produced on certain estates within Darjeeling and Kalimpong. The tea leaves are processed as black tea, though some estates have expanded their product offerings to include leaves suitable for making green, white, and oolong teas.
