Description: The General Post Office, Kolkata is the central post office of the city of Kolkata, India, and the chief post office of West Bengal. The site where the GPO is located was the site of the first Fort William. The GPO is notable for its imposing high domed roof and tall logic-Corinthian pillars. A postal museum that was built in 1884 displays a collection of artefacts and stamps. The Kolkata GPO, formerly known as Walter Granville's General Post Office, built in 1864-68, is situated in a historic location. It is a memorable monument of British presence and a magnificent building that still graces the place, "a refined and stately structure surmounted by a colossal dome and crowned by large rusticated pylons linked by Corinthian colonnades.

Philip Davis considered it Granville's finest classical creation, adding that the main hall, which extends the full height of the building, provides an imposing setting for the masses of humanity coming and going under the dome. Even after the relocation of Fort William the site remained at the heart of the city and the building became its new landmark. Under pressure from people and especially traffic crumbling infrastructure and broken pavements, it is now one of the most notable of Calcutta's oldest buildings. Its plaster is still gleaming white, its porticoes have not yet cracked or crumbled, and it still has the Greek luster that painters love and foreign visitors marvel.
