Description: Durga Puja is a major festival of Hindus traditionally celebrated for 10 days in the month of Ashwin, especially in Bengal, Assam and other eastern Indian states. Durga Puja celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. It begins on the same day as Navratri, a nine-night festival in many northern and western states that more widely celebrates the divine feminine power.

The first day of Durga Puja is Mahalaya, which heralds the arrival of the goddess. The celebrations and puja begin on the sixth day, Shashthi. During the next three days, the Goddess is worshiped in her various forms such as Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. The festival ends with Vijayadashami, when the sacred images are taken in huge procession to the local rivers, where they are immersed. This practice symbolizes the departure of the goddess to her home. Images of the goddess riding on a lion, attacking the demon king Mahishasura are placed in various pandals and temples.
