The festival ends with Vijayadashami, when the sacred images are taken in huge procession to the local rivers, where they are immersed. This practice symbolizes the departure of the goddess to her home. Images of the goddess riding on a lion, attacking the demon king Mahishasura are placed in various pandals and temples.
