Description: The name 'Jorashanko' was named after the twin temples of Lord Shiva. Jorasanko Thakurbari or Tagore's Palace is one of the architectural splendors of central Kolkata.

It is one of the architectural splendors of Kolkata. This was the house of Dwarkanath Tagore also known as Lal Ghar in Girish Park on Chittaranjan Avenue.

Also known as the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore, the place is now a museum and center of Oriental and foreign education dedicated to the life and works of the Nobel laureate in global literature.

It was constructed in the year 1785 and is spread over 35000 square meters. Today the building houses Rabindra Bharati University, which was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru on Tagore's birth centenary, on 8 May 1962.

Its complex houses the Maharishi Bhawan, named after the poet's father Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, where, as the plaque outside reads, "Rabindranath was born here and breathed his last." Today the residence is a museum with three galleries dedicated to Tagore, his family members and the Bengal Renaissance. These galleries showcase intimate family photographs, life-size paintings and a glimpse of Rabindranath Tagore's evolution as a poet-philosopher and social reformer.

The Tagore family lived in Kolkata from the beginning. This family has given birth to giants in the world of art and literature. The greatest of them was Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore – the poet of all poets. He was an epitome of greatness in the fields of art and literature, science and social reform.

The museum at Jorasanko Thakurbari has also preserved the works of other eminent members of this distinguished family such as Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, Jyotirindranath Tagore, Abanandranath Tagore and Dinendranath Tagore. Tagore's clippings and many photographs and paintings of him and his entire family are also preserved in it. The gifts received by him on various occasions are also present in the Rabindra Bharati Museum and this museum is dedicated to the public.

The museum at Jorasanko Thakurbari also has a section that stores music records dating back two centuries. Jorasanko Thakurbari also contains wealth and information about other great personalities of the 19th and 20th centuries who excelled in the field of Bengali and English literature.
