PO Name: Jhargram

Description: The history of Jhargram Palace (Rajbari) dates back to the year 1574 when the King of Amer, Man Singh I (Jaipur), came here on the orders of Akbar to conquer Bengal and defeated the local Mall tribal kings who were ruling Jangalkhand. On his victory, the Raja, as a reward, gave the mansabdari of the entire region of Jangalkhand as a subservient and tributary state to the Mughal emperor Akbar to his victorious generals Sarveshwar Singh Chauhan and his elder brother. Raja Man Singh, I resided here for four months and later appointed his trusted general Sarveshwar Singh as the king of Jhargram and his elder brother as the king of Bishnupur. Decided to leave and return to Rajasthan. Then General Sarveshwar Singh named his capital Jhargram which means 'village surrounded by deep forests', hence the rulers of Jhargram assumed the title of "Malla Deb".

In 1799, the ruler of Jhargram, along with the rulers of Bishnupur and others, rebelled against the East India Company and this rebellion was called the Chuar Rebellion. But in the rebellion, the ruler was forced to surrender and the state of Jhargram was handed over to the British. Given the status of a zamindari estate under the right. Under this arrangement it was appointed eight chieftains and one sub-zamindar of Beliabera. The royal family ruled with their dominance. The state had its golden age during the reign of Raja Narasimha Malla Deb. A fort still exists behind this Raj Niwas, which was built to house the members of the royal family and rule the state from this place.

Jhargram Palace was built in a very grand manner. It is constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, designed by Shri Khitish Chandra Biswas, the then Chief Valuer of the Calcutta Improvement Trust. There are beautiful gardens and lawns in and around the palace. Its work started in 1922 AD during the reign of King Narasimha Malla Dev and the building was completed in 1931 AD. The palace is so grandly and artistically built that the interiors of the palace bring back memories of the past. Under the guidance of his guru and Diwan Rai Bahadur Debendra Mohan Bhattacharya, he developed the city of Jhargram as a modern planned township, one of the finest examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture in Eastern India and spread over 30 acres in Jhargram. The Raj Palace is a grand Italianate structure, set in meticulously maintained lawns and gardens. The palace was renovated by the Calcutta Improvement Trust in 1931 AD during the reign of Raja Narsingh Malla Deb Bahadur. The past comes alive in the palace complex replete with the royal lifestyle. Jhargram Raj Palace has been hosting many dignitaries since its inception.
